Milwaukee - EC/TDS (ppm)
Milwaukee Instruments EC & TDS Meters — Accurate Electrical Conductivity & Total Dissolved Solids Testing
Milwaukee Instruments offers a complete range of EC and TDS meters built to professional standards — affordable, easy to use, and trusted by growers, aquaculture professionals, water treatment specialists, and laboratory technicians worldwide. Whether you need a simple handheld TDS pen or a continuous inline EC monitor, Milwaukee has the right instrument for your application.
What Is EC and TDS?
EC (Electrical Conductivity) measures an aqueous solution's ability to conduct electricity based on its ionic activity and content, expressed in microsiemens (µS/cm) or millisiemens (mS/cm).
TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) measures the total concentration of dissolved solids — primarily inorganic salts, minerals, and trace organic matter — in water, expressed in parts per million (ppm), parts per thousand (ppt), or mg/L.
Why Measure EC & TDS?
Monitoring EC and TDS is critical across many industries and applications:
- Hydroponics & Agriculture: Determine and control nutrient concentration in growing solutions for optimal plant health
- Aquariums & Aquaculture: Simulate natural water environments and maintain species-appropriate water chemistry
- Water & Wastewater Treatment: Monitor water purity and treatment effectiveness
- Pools, Spas & Plumbing: Maintain water balance and prevent scale or corrosion
EC vs. TDS — Which Should You Measure?
Digital meters determine TDS by mathematically converting EC readings. Three conversion factors are commonly used: NaCl (0.5 factor, ideal for nutrient solutions), 442™, and KCl. Your meter handles the conversion automatically — simply select the factor that best matches your application. As a rule: if your industry uses EC, buy an EC meter; if it uses TDS, buy a TDS meter.
Temperature & Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC)
Solution temperature significantly affects EC/TDS readings — up to 4% per degree Celsius. Most Milwaukee meters feature Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC), automatically correcting readings to the standard 25°C/77°F reference point. Entry-level models require manual compensation using a conversion table.
Meter Care & Calibration
- Rinse the probe in tap or soapy water after each use and store dry
- Calibrate once per week with daily use, or whenever readings become suspect
- Milwaukee EC/TDS meters hold calibration well under normal conditions
