Why Iron Testing Matters
Aquariums: Excess iron promotes nuisance algae growth and can harm sensitive fish species. Monitoring iron helps maintain optimal water quality.
Swimming Pools: Iron causes brown staining of pool surfaces, water discoloration, and unsightly rust marks. Testing prevents costly damage.
Drinking Water: Iron creates metallic taste, stains fixtures and laundry, and can indicate pipe corrosion. The EPA secondary standard is 0.3 mg/L—the HI721's low range is ideal for compliance monitoring.
Hydroponics: Iron is an essential micronutrient, but excess levels can cause toxicity. Precise monitoring ensures optimal plant nutrition.
How It Works
The HI721 uses an EPA-adapted Phenanthroline colorimetric method. Iron reacts with the reagent to produce an orange-red color proportional to iron concentration. The built-in LED light source (525 nm) and silicon photocell detector measure the color intensity and display the precise iron concentration digitally.
Simple testing procedure:
- Fill cuvette with 10 mL water sample to line
- Add HI721 reagent packet and mix thoroughly
- Wait 3 minutes for color development
- Insert cuvette into HI721 Checker HC
- Press button to read iron concentration in mg/L
